AirTran Inks Labor Pact

Signs five-year deal with union.

announced Wednesday it reached a five-year contract agreement with the

International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 528

, which will take effect Sept. 1.

The agreement covers about 40 ground support equipment mechanics and related employees working for AirTran Airways in Atlanta, Baltimore and Orlando, Fla. GSE Mechanics maintain the ground support equipment, such as tugs, tractors, pushback units, carts and other equipment the airline uses in its daily operation, the Orlando, Fla.-based company said.

The agreement is subject to membership ratification, which is underway and expected within ten days.

The company's shares closed up 36 cents, or 3.2%, at $11.61 Wednesday.
