Pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories (ABT) - Get Report has made updates to its implantable pacemakers and defibrillators in conjunction with its ongoing efforts to boost patient safety, and prevent the devices from external hackers.

The updated software will add further security measures for its pacemakers, devised to lower the risk of unauthorized access to the devices.

Other updates include a Battery Performance Alert for its implantable cardioverter defibrillators, which Abbott says will give physicians earlier warnings of battery depletion.

"Connected devices are having a significant positive impact for patients and their health," said Robert Ford, executive VP, Medical Devices, Abbott. "To further protect our patients, Abbott has developed new firmware with additional security measures that can be installed on our pacemakers."
