NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Owning a big sport utility vehicle, such as the hip-hop favorite Cadillac Escalade, can be quite the status symbol. But it will cost you.

The vehicle itself can cost up to $86,000, and, to add insult to injury, filling up the truck’s huge gas tank will run around $85 a pop, even with today’s lower average prices.

While some of the most popular SUVs are getting more fuel-efficient, the biggest vehicles on the road still have a ways to go when it comes to boosting their miles-per-gallon averages. According to the latest U.S. Department of Energy and the Environment Protection Agency’s Fuel Economy Guide for 2014 models, most standard SUVs get less than 20 miles to the gallon, with vehicles like Mercedes-Benz’s G550 and its G63 AMG, getting a mere 13 combined MPG. Drivers need to decide if the benefits of buying a big SUV outweigh how much it costs to fill up a tank of gas.

TheStreet compiled a list of 18 SUVs that will cost you the most when filling up the gas tank.

A note on our methodology: We are assuming a price per gallon of gas costs $3.25, roughly the average of what Americans are paying in October. TheStreet excluded SUVs that use diesel fuel.
