15 Weird Things Americans Love to Eat For Thanksgiving - TheStreet

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - Believe it or not, it's not all about turkey on Thanksgiving. Americans tend to have a hankering for Indian food and many other non-traditional eats on a day otherwise dominated by poultry, stuffing and cranberry sauce.

That's the finding, at least, from online and mobile food ordering company GrubHub (GRUB) - Get Report . People who order in on Thanksgiving rather than spend a day cooking are two times more likely to order Tandoori chicken on the holiday than any other day throughout the year, for instance.

The list of foods folks order in on Thanksgiving seems to be made up of foods people eat when they party and Indian foods. Late-night favorites like mozzarella sticks and cheesy breadsticks increase in popularity on Thanksgiving along with mango lassi, a sweet yogurt-based drink made with mango, and chicken biryani, an Indian rice dish.

The reason might be that Indian restaurants stay open on Thanksgiving, while many others are closed.

"Indian food is already a really popular takeout cuisine, so factoring in the closing of other popular restaurants could explain the marked effect on order volume," Allie Mack, a GrubHub spokeswoman, wrote in an email.

GrubHub came up with this list by culling takeout and delivery orders during last year's holiday season.
