Latest-Activist-Situations: Daniel Loeb's Third Point hedge fund lowered its stake in biopharmaceutical concern
by more than half, to 4.1%. Third Point had earlier asked the company's management to retain an investment bank for the purposes of exploring a sale.
Biggest % Losers:
experienced substantial loses for the second consecutive day, plunging 21% to $1.50 after Polyheme, a blood substitute, revealed disturbing news. In phase III trials, Polyheme, the company's only product, was found to highly increase the rate of heart attacks in patients given the blood substitute.
Varian Medical Systems
, a medical device maker, slumped to $40.24 after announcing it had acquired Bio-Imaging Research, an X-ray imaging company, for $21 million.
