Jill McDonald will join the food, clothing and home retailer known as M&S as Managing Director of Clothing, Home and Beauty, as the retailer restructures its store portfolio.
McDonald will have overall profit and loss accountability for all aspects of the M&S non-Food business, from design and sourcing through to supply chain and logistics, and will report directly in to M&S CEO Steve Rowe.
The appointment will mean Rowe will relinquish his Clothing, Home & Beauty accountabilities and for CFO Helen Weir will hand over responsibility for the Clothing, Home and Beauty Supply Chain and Logistics.
McDonald will join the M&S in the fall. She is currently the CEO of Halfords, where she has held the top job since 2015. According to relationship mapping tool BoardEx, a business unit of The Street, prior to joining Halfords, McDonald spent nine years at McDonald's(MCD) - Get Report in various positions, including CEO of McDonald's UK.
"M&S has a unique, special relationship with its customers and I am very motivated by working closely with customers to drive and shape results," McDonald said in a statement.
The change in management sent shares in both retailers down, however, with M&S falling was down 1.24% and Halfords losing 3% by mid-day in London.
Halfords, which sells bicycling and auto components, has seen good sales under McDonald. Like-for-like retail revenues were 7% higher in the 15 weeks to Jan. 13. Analysts had expected sales to rise 3.6% year-on-year, after Halfords reported 2.4% like-for-like retail sales growth in the first half.
Like-for-like revenues in Halfords' auto division, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of total sales, were up 6.8% year on year and cycling revenues increased 7.4 per cent on a like-for-like basis.
Meanwhile, M&S in late April said it would open 34 new Food stores, and two new Clothing, Home and Food stores. It would also consult on the closure of six stores.
The move comes after full review of its U.K. store portfolio in November, which resulted in a clear move towards food. "The plans will improve the M&S store estate to better meet customer needs and include opening 200 new Food-only stores and selling Clothing and Home from 60 fewer locations," the company said. "The result will be more, conveniently located M&S stores but fewer, more inspirational Clothing and Home stores that offer customers better ranging and availability."
