When a cannabis company needs money to fuel growth, it's never as simple as just heading to the bank to shop investors. 

Ben Curren, the chief executive officer of cannabis point of sale technology platform Green Bits, said his small-cap company used its fortunate funding situation as a competitive advantage. But for other firms without initial capital, accessing the funding they need to grow and scale can be an enormous industry-wide hurdle.

While some turn to cannabis-specific venture capital firms, other might consider listing shares on a public exchange.
