General Motors (GM) - Get Report and Ford (F) - Get Report both proclaimed successful holiday season sales when they released their monthly sales figures Wednesday and both companies' shares rose more than 5% in afternoon trade.
GM said total sales in the U.S. increased 10% year-over-year to 319,108 vehicles, while Ford said that U.S. sales ticked up .3% year-over-year to 239,854.
Both companies' top sellers are ranked below.
The storied F-Series had a decent December
1. Ford F-Series
Ford's staple pickup truck line paced all vehicles in December. 87,512 of the trucks were sold in December, a 2.7% increase year over year.
The Silverado didn't have a great month, but it was still a top seller
2. Chevrolet Silverado
Sales of GM's quintessential pickup truck fell by 13.8% year-over-year for December, but the Silverado was still the automaker's strongest performer. 54,272 vehicles were sold in the month.
The Equinox was a winner
3. Chevrolet Equinox
27,195 versions of the crossover drove off the lot in December, a 24.6% year-over-year increase.
People wanted the Ford Escape last month
4. Ford Escape
The entry-level crossover ($23,750 starting MSRP) was a brisk mover in December. 25,788 of the vehicles sold during the month.
No love for the GMC Sierra, either
5. GMC Sierra
Sales of the pickup truck slid 15.1% year-over-year for December, but 23,290 versions of the vehicle moved.
The Malibu sold very well
6. Chevrolet Malibu
Interest in the sedan skyrocketed in December, as sales grew 87.3% year over year. 22,764 Malibus left the lot.
