The U.S. Justice Department and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU) - Get Report are near a settlement of charges the automaker used software to get around emission limits on more than 100,000 diesel vehicles, according to a published report.

Terms of the agreement could be disclosed this week, Reuters reported.

The Justice Department has been pressing for significant fines and funds to offset the pollution since it sued the company for allegedly using software that resulted in higher emissions than permitted.

Fiat Chrysler set aside more than $800 million as a contingency against a settlement last year, according to the report.

In 2015, Volkswagen AG acknowledged using software in its vehicles for years to get around U.S. emission standards and reached a $25 billion settlement with authorities.
