Exchange-traded funds following metals and mining were also higher for the session. Gold finished the session with a gain of $1.20, to $668.50 an ounce, and silver added 20 cents, to $13.91 an ounce.
iShares Silver Trust
was higher by 1.8% to $138.34. The
SPDR S&P Metals & Mining
ETF was up 1.7% to $53.15. The
Market Vectors Gold Miners
ETF was climbing 1.3% to $40.11.
Housing-related ETFs were also higher after
swung to a fourth-quarter loss but still beat estimates. The
iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction
ETF was rising 1.1% at $41.75. The
ETF was higher by 1% to $37.80.
Internet Architecture HOLDRs
ETF was one of very few losers for the session. Holding
was shedding nearly 2%. The ETF was falling by 8 cents, or 0.2%, to $43.16.
