Greece Keeps the Lady Waiting: Dave's Daily
"Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow"
Mark Twain
There really isn't much more to say about the Greek situation. Monday we mentioned the Argentine default in 2001 but noted it wasn't in a common currency treaty with others--a major difference. Still the Greek situation remains a cloud overhanging markets. Some think a default is inevitable while others think Greece must agree to politically unacceptable terms. The contagion is the problem since the elephant in the room is Italy, a much bigger deal.
China stated Tuesday that industrial growth might slow and German industrial output unexpectedly sank 2.9% versus expectations of no change. These aren't encouraging.
Meanwhile rumors surfaced late on Tuesday that Greeks are putting a satisfactory deal together that would placate their EU masters and private debtors. This caused the dollar to fall late after being stronger early and also caused gold to rise after a few days of losses. Fed Chairman Bernanke also stated, despite a recent good employment report, "We're going to remain accommodative". So, a weaker dollar and a full punchbowl is just what Mr. Market ordered for bulls--at least what's left of them. Crude oil prices also reversed course and rallied while bond prices fell.
So, the light volume melt-up in U.S. equity markets continues. Many investors (you should read my emails sometime) are scratching their heads in disbelief as stocks rally. After all, good economic reports seem rather contrived and there isn't much from this area this week. Earnings reports have been just okay and guidance has been less than stellar. Earnings from Coca-Cola (KO) beat estimates, Boeing (BA) was down on production delays, Disney (DIS) beat estimates but the stock was lower in late trading.
As stated, trading volume remains very light and breadth per the WSJ was positive to mixed.

The
NYMO
is a market breadth indicator that is based on the difference between the number of advancing and declining issues on the NYSE. When readings are +60/-60 markets are extended short-term.
The
McClellan Summation Index
is a long-term version of the McClellan Oscillator. It is a market breadth indicator, and interpretation is similar to that of the McClellan Oscillator, except that it is more suited to major trends. I believe readings of +1000/-1000 reveal markets as much extended.
The
VIX
is a widely used measure of market risk and is often referred to as the "investor fear gauge". Our own interpretation is highlighted in the chart above. The VIX measures the level of put option activity over a 30-day period. Greater buying of put options (protection) causes the index to rise.
Continue to Concluding Remarks
Are we still overbought? Very much so especially if you view the McClellan Summation Index ($NYSI) viewed just above. A market this overbought with light volume can be accident prone. Should anything go wrong a heavy volume sell-off could ensue.
Let's see what happens.
