Walt Disney  (DIS) had a heck of a weekend at the box office.

In its debut weekend, "The Lion King" took in a staggering $185 million of theater receipts, easily beating estimates of $150 million.

But that wasn't the only reason for the media giant to celebrate. Disney-owned Marvel Cinematic Universe got a boost for "Avengers: Endgame" as the film became the highest-grossing picture of all time, raking in $2.8 billion globally. It surpassed the previous top grosser, "Avatar." Disney acquired the rights to "Avatar" in its $71 billion purchase of most of Twenty-First Century Fox's assets earlier this year. 

The much-anticipated "Avatar 2" is expected to get released late next year.

Meanwhile, moon landing documentary "Apollo 11" got a boost with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's moonwalk in 1969. It's total gross now has exceeded $9 million to make it the highest-grossing documentary of the year

Over the weekend, horror movies continued to thrill audiences, with "Annabelle Comes Home" and "Midsommar" raking in $2.7 million and $1.6 million. respectively.
