Major cell phone providers including Verizon (VZ) - Get Report , Sprint, AT&T (T) - Get Report and T-Mobile (TMUS) - Get Report all reportedly were experiencing service issues on Monday.

Numerous media reports citing the website downdetector.com -- which uses social media posts to extrapolate the size and location of communications and utility services -- indicated there were phone and internet outages on the East Coast and in California.

Representatives for Verizon and AT&T could not be reached, but according to published reports, company representatives said they were not aware of any problems.

According to a report from ABC affiliate WWAY in Wilmington, N.C., some East Coast customers experienced internet and phone outages as the result of a fiber cable being cut. The report cited representatives of Spectrum cable and DirecTV as saying technical teams had restored power later in the day.
