BlackBerry Ltd. (BB - Get Report) sued Twitter (TWTR - Get Report) in federal court Wednesday claiming the social media site infringed on messaging system patents developed by the one-time mobile phone giant, according to published reports.
BlackBerry claimed Twitter was trying to make up for coming late to the mobile messaging business by infringing on six of its patents, Tech Crunch and Reuters reported.
BlackBerry once dominated the mobile communication device market with phones that featured physical keyboards. The company lost out, however, as Apple's (AAPL - Get Report) iPhones and other smartphones using Alphabet's (GOOGL - Get Report) Android operating system gained popularity.
BlackBerry is expected to report earnings, on March 27, of 5 cents a share on sales of $241.1 million for the current quarter, based on a FactSet survey of 14 analysts. In the same period a year ago the company posted earnings of 5 cents a share on sales of $233 million.
The stock has fallen 15% since the company last reported earnings on Dec. 20.
