NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- After apparel maker Perry Ellis (PERY) - Get Report warned that labor strife at West Coast ports had negatively affected its fourth quarter results, an analyst warned that "nearly all apparel makers" could be affected by the slowdown.
WHAT'S NEW: Perry Ellis warned that disruptions at America's West Coast ports, triggered by a labor dispute, had reduced its Q4 revenue by $23M. The apparel maker now expects its Q4 revenue to come in at $218M, versus the consensus outlook of $242M. Perry Ellis provided fiscal 2016 revenue guidance of $925M-$935M, versus the consensus outlook of $955M.
ANALYST REACTION: In a note to investors today, Wunderlich analyst Eric Beder reduced his Q4 estimates for Perry Ellis, and wrote that "nearly all apparel players will be affected by the (port) slowdown." However, the company's fiscal 2016 guidance still suggests that its revenue and profits will rise significantly next year, making the stock attractive in the wake of its decline today, Beder believes. Moreover, the guidance could prove conservative next year if the labor dispute is resolved, added the analyst, who cut his price target on Perry Ellis shares to $29 from $30 but kept a Buy rating on the shares. Meanwhile, Piper Jaffray analyst Neely Tamminga downgraded her rating on retailer Williams-Sonoma (WSM) - Get Report to Neutral from Overweight, citing increased discounts, as well as the slowdown at the West Coast ports. However, after speaking with retailers, the analyst believes that the slowdown "isn't a game changer for the year," but must be resolved before back to school products are delivered, since back to school and holiday products do not fit well together. Retailers that are able to raise prices have been shipping products by air, while those retailers with a high percentage of stores on the West Coast could be negatively impacted by delayed shipments, Tammings warned.
OTHERS TO WATCH: Other apparel makers include Nike (NKE) - Get Report , PVH Corp. (PVH) - Get Report , VF Corp. (VFC) - Get Report , Vera Bradley (VRA) - Get Report , and Ralph Lauren (RL) - Get Report .
PRICE ACTION: In early trading, Perry Ellis dropped 4.5% to $22.85, while Williams-Sonoma declined 1.75% to $80.27.
