Following Amazon.com's  (AMZN) - Get Amazon.com, Inc. Report decision to slash prices for its Echo Dot to $49 from $99, a new report from DigiTimes suggests that the e-commerce giant will surpass 10 million shipments of the device in 2017.

Some suppliers even contend that Amazon has already increased its orders to over 10 million units this year, more than triple the 2016 volume.

The price reduction boosts both Amazon's smart speaker device overall demand, sources from the upstream supply chain told DigiTimes.

The sources also told the publication that the Echo Dot has already achieved Amazon's annual shipment goal planned initially for 2017, in just a few months.

Shares of Amazon were higher nearly 1% during the final hour of trading on Friday.
