Week 1 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Foles, Pettis and the two Jacksons
Week 1 Sleepers
Just like in stock investing, if you want to beat the market, you have to find those contrarian plays that others don’t have to boost your portfolio. So along with stacking your lineup with the Mahomes and McCaffreys, your season-long and DFS line-ups need their share of sleepers, the deeper the better.
Here are the NFL week 1 sleepers:
QB - Lamar Jackson - Bal - vs. MIA - The experts have Jackson ranked 8th best QB this week but watch for Jackson to run all over this Miami defense. That unit has only gotten worse from last year where it ranked second worst against the run behind the Cardinals. Ravens beefed up the running game with the addition of running back Mark Ingram and some say he could hurt Jackson’s run production. Yes, he may snipe some of those TD runs from Jackson, but overall the addition of Ingram will free up Jackson to do more with the ball. In the last game of the season against Cleveland, Jackson ran for two TDs and 90 yards. Look for similar production.
WR - Desean Jackson - PHI - vs. WAS - Jackson is exactly the kind of emotional player that does his best when he has something to play for so look for him to make more than a couple big plays in this game against his old team, the Redskins. “This is where I belong,” said Jackson in an interview with Eagles Insider. He’s going to be pumped to be back at the "Linc" and the fans will be too. To boot, Coach Pederson is already making hints that Jackson will get some shots at making a home run play.
QB - Nick Foles - JAC- vs. KC - The Jacksonville QB position had the same job security as keyboardist for the Grateful Dead did but I expect the Super Bowl champ Foles to make a splash in his new home. There are legit concerns about the JAX offensive system, but that won’t matter in this game. The match-up has the second-highest total on the Vegas board so look for a shootout per usual for the Chiefs, who gave up a lot of fantasy points to opposing QBs last year. Foles may be available on the wire so a good streamer, DFS option here.
WR - Josh Gordon - NE - vs. Pit - Even his competitor for targets is hyping up his return. He’s had more time to learn Belichick’s system and thrived last year when Gronkowski, now retired, was out. Gordon averaged nearly 104 yards a game with no Gronk, according to Fanduel. Experts rank him the 29th wide receiver this week. That’s way too low for a player with something to prove against a rival.
WR - Dante Pettis - SF - vs. TB - The youngster has a strange father-son relationship with Kyle Shanahan, with the coach talking smack about him in the press and then ends up listing him as the No. 1 receiver in the depth chart anyway. It should be another game with little defense is played so look for a breakout as Pettis establishes himself as a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo’s second-best option behind Kittle.
