Ty Johnson has a Huge Opportunity in Lions Backfield With Kerryon Johnson on Injured Reserve, Plus Other Running Backs to add in Week 8

There's no such thing as too much running back depth in fantasy football which is why fantasy managers would be wise to pickup some valuable free agents in Week 8.

Lions Put Kerryon Johnson on Injured Reserve

The Waiver Wire is always full of surprises-some are good surprises, some are bad. Players get injured. Players get cut. Player emerge. Players get picked up. It's the natural life cycle of the fantasy football waiver wire.

Heading into Week 8 a new player has emerged as the hands-down top pickup of the Week and that's Detroit's rookie running back Ty Johnson. Early on Tuesday the Lions placed starting running back Kerryon Johnson on Injured Reserve after the team announced the second year back will undergo knee surgery. Johnson missed six games during his rookie campaign with a knee injury as well. Meanwhile Ty Johnson took over for the injured Kerryon Johnson in Week 7. He handled ten carries for 29 yards and boosted his value production with four catches for 28 yards.

Ty Johnson, a 6th round pick out of Maryland, stands at 5'10 and weighs in at 210 pounds, two physical traits that translate well for an every down rusher. Johnson's 4.45 40 yard dash time is in the 92nd percentile according to Player Profiler.

With the Giants, Raiders, and Bears on the schedule for the next three games, Johnson is in line for some great match-ups. All three teams were ran over by running backs in their last few games, giving Johnson an "easier" taste to his first action as an NFL starting running back.

If you are in a PPR league, J.D. McKissic is another option to look at in the Lions backfield. For depth purposes, Detroit may add a veteran free agent or activate Paul Perkins from their reserve squad.

Other running backs to consider picking up in Week 8:

Chase Edmonds, Arizona Cardinals: Somehow still available in 50% of leagues. If you haven't yet noticed, there's something wrong with David Johnson and Edmonds is the clear cut next man up as evident by his dominating performance against the Giants. If you are in a smaller league or shallow bench, Edmonds may still be available.

Benny Snell, Pittsburgh Steelers

Darrell Henderson, Los Angeles Rams

Mark Walton, Cincinnati Bengals

Brian Hill, Atlanta Falcons

Brandon Bolden, New England Patriots

I think Ty and JD will split with Johnson getting the majority.
