Definition of 'Whisper Number'
When a company is expected to beat earnings, "whisper numbers" are the earnings that analysts think, but don't dare write, a company will make. While it's nice to know what kinds of earnings the Street dreams of, things get out of hand at times. Often, a company will get bid up ahead of earnings day, beat estimates, but still fall -- it didn't hit the whisper number. Some companies actively discourage analysts from passing around whisper numbers.
