Intel's Next CEO Could Be One of These 5 People

For Intel (INTC - Get Report) , it's been a long road to finding a permanent CEO, but the search is reportedly drawing to a close.

After former CEO Brian Krzanich parted ways with the chipmaker in June 2018, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with an employee, Intel appointed CFO Bob Swan to take the reins on an interim basis. According to a Bloomberg report, Intel is aiming to appoint a new CEO before its next earnings report on Jan. 24.

Meanwhile, as reported by RealMoney's Kevin Curran, shareholders are urging the chipmaker to find a strong leader soon, and debating whether that executive should come from inside or outside Intel. Traditionally, the chipmaker has promoted executives from within the company -- but chairman Andy Bryant reportedly told employees the board is seeking a "non-traditional" candidate, interpreted by some to mean an outside candidate. Intel's stock is down about 9% since Krzanich's departure.

So who are some of the candidates? Below is a shortlist of industry heavyweights that Intel may be considering.

1. Johny Srouji (SVP Hardware Technologies, Apple)

The Information reported that the Apple (AAPL - Get Report) exec, regarded as a guru of the chip business, has landed on Intel's short list. Srouji leads Apple's in-house chip development team, which has been moving away from relying on Intel's products in recent years. But Srouji, who worked at Intel from 1990-2005, might be tough to lure away, since he's one of Apple's highest-paid executives.

2. Navin Shenoy (EVP Data Center Group, Intel)

The Intel insider currently leads the company's data center group, and reports have indicated that Shenoy may be on the board's short list.

3. Lisa Su (CEO, AMD)

The leader of Intel competitor AMD has been named as an attractive candidate to lead Intel, but it could take some heavy lifting to recruit the well-regarded (AMD - Get Report) CEO to make the jump to a rival.

4. Murthy Renduchintala (Chief Engineering Officer, Intel)

Shortly after Kranich's resignation, the engineering chief at Intel was named as a natural successor given his deep expertise in the critical areas of IoT and mobile.

5. Diane Bryant (former COO, Google Cloud)

The ex-Google (GOOGL - Get Report) cloud exec is also an Intel vet, having served as president of Intel's data center group. In August, Aragon Research wrote that Bryant would be a "refreshing" pick to lead the company in a new era of IoT.
