Time is ticking away until the April 15th tax deadline. If you're still scrambling to complete your return, you may want to keep in mind some last minute deductions. If you've kept your receipts and documented your charges you can deduct travel mileage, the use of your work cellphone and true business entertainment like meals or coffees. For the self employed, personal health insurance also counts as an expense. Some of your retirement options can also provide a timely bail out. If you're self employed consider adopting a retirement plan like an SEP IRA or Solo K that allows pretax contributions of $52,000 or 25 percent of your income, whichever is less. If both parents work you can usually take advantage of dependent care credit. If you have young children in after school care or day care those payments can be deducted. If you're looking to make estate provisions for your family in later life you can also do that in a tax efficient way. You can make a $14,000 gift to each of your heirs tax free or pay beneficiaries tuition and medical expenses directly to avoid a tax hit. It's never a bad idea to consult a tax adviser or an accountant to make sure you've got all your bases covered.
