In today's heartwarming corporate story of the day, Starbucks (SBUX) - Get Report closed 700 stores ahead of Hurricane Irma and offered catastrophic pay to its employees that couldn't make their shifts due to store closures or inability to get to work. They had issued the same mandate during Hurricane Harvey.

In a note from Kevin Johnson, Starbucks President and CEO said:

As with Hurricane Harvey, these measures include issuing catastrophic pay, expediting an unprecedented number of CUP Fund grants, and closing stores prior to mandatory evacuation orders to ensure partners had the greatest opportunity to prepare their stores for potential storm damage and, more importantly, prepare themselves and their families.

CUP Fund grants are a way for employees to help other employees by contributing to a financial assistance program that helps one another in times of need like after natural disasters or family emergencies.
