The devastating storm has already destroyed 90% of the buildings on Dominica and, with 160mph winds, the U.S. National Hurricane Center has warned that Maria could be "potentially catastrophic".
Maria has caused torrential downpours on the US Virgin Island of St Croix overnight
3.5 million people living in Puerto Rico have been urged to find shelter before the storm hits and there are fears that Puerto Rico could experience landslides and 9 foot storm surges. Governor Ricardo Rossello called Hurricane Maria "the worst storm of the last century"
