Equifax CEO Richard Smith Steps Down Following Data Breach
It took less than three weeks after Equifax Inc. (EFX) - Get Report publicly disclosed that a cyberattack compromised the personal information of more than 143 million Americans, for the company's Chairman and CEO Richard Smith to announce he is stepping down.
He is not alone. Since Equifax went public about the hack, chief information officer, David Webb, and chief security officer, Susan Mauldin also announced their departures.
This is not Equifax's first security breach and we are now learning this isn't the first time high-ranking executives left the company in the time surrounding a security breach.
Let's go back to April 2013. That's when Equifax told New Hampshire's attorney general that a nearly year-long breach occurred, that allowed the operator of an IP address to obtain credit reports using "sufficient personal information to meet Equifax's identity verification process."
According to data from BoardEx, just before that breach, the company's vice president of international security Jay Leek and senior director of global security compliance Hmong Vang left.
John Carter, the former chief data officer, departed in April 2012. I reached out to him and he declined to comment on why he left but said his role there was not related to data security.
One month before the April 2013 hack, Tony Spinelli, who was the chief security officer and Mauldin's predecessor left Equifax. Spinelli did not respond to my multiple requests for comment
I even reached out to Equifax last week hoping to find out who replaced the other employees in the in the security-related positions but was told that the company's policy is not to discuss personnel matters.
