Sonus Networks (SONS) shares were tagged Thursday after the company warned of a big fourth-quarter sales shortfall.

The Chelmsford, Mass., advanced phone switch maker says revenue will be about 11% below analysts' expectation for the quarter ended Dec. 31.

The company says preliminary results for the fourth quarter show earnings in a range of 2 cents to 3 cents a share on sales of about $44.5 million. Analysts were looking for earnings of 2 cents on sales of $50 million, according to Thomson First Call.

Shares of the networking shop fell 21% to $4.35 in after-hours trading Thursday.

The company hit a bookkeeping snag last year and is currently working with auditors to clean up its records.

Sonus said in a press release Thursday that it will wait to report its final financial results after the completion of the audit of its financial statements and the filing of its annual report. The company expects to make its filings on March 16.
