Research in Motion Gains on Results, Outlook

Research in Motion (RIMM) was up 8% in preopen Island trading. After the close Thursday the maker of the BlackBerry wireless email device said second-quarter earnings met the Street's estimate of 5 cents per share. The company earned 1 cent per share a year ago.

Research in Motion also said it is maintaining its guidance for the current quarter and its "positive outlook" for the second half of the year.

The forecast was boosting another handheld computer maker.

was up 4.9% preopen.
