Chico's FAS Sees Earnings, Sales Rise

The company also says first-quarter same-store sales rose 7.8%.

, a retailer of women's clothing and accessories, reported double-digit year-over-year earnings and revenue growth in the first fiscal quarter.

The company said total sales for the first quarter rose 29.5% to $169 million from $130.5 million for the same period a year ago. Net income climbed to $23.4 million, or 27 cents a share, from $19.8 million, or 23 cents a share, last year. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 28 cents a share and a top line of $167.7 million.

Same-store sales for company-owned stores increased 7.8% in the first quarter.

Shares of Chico's ended

New York Stock Exchange

trading Wednesday at $21.60.
