Apple, Android Phones Led Black Friday Surge

A new report shows that smartphone activations and app downloads jumped over the Thanksgiving holiday.

) -- The busy Thanksgiving shopping weekend saw a big jump in sales of smartphones and in downloads of mobile applications.

New mobile devices detected on Black Friday rose by 57% over the previous week's Friday, reports research firm

. Most of this growth was driven by

Apple

Google

(GOOG) - Get Report

Android devices, including the

Samsung

Galaxy S,

Motorola

(MOT)

Droid 2 and

LG

Optimus S.

App downloads over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend also rose 25% over the previous week as consumers seek to customize their smartphones.

Thanksgiving Day saw app growth jump 54%, while downloads on Black Friday increased 39%.

Total new device growth for Thanksgiving weekend grew 31% over the same period last year, which means consumers are buying and activating smartphones earlier in the holiday season, Flurry found.

Flurry predicts this holiday day season will be a record-breaking one for app downloads and mobile device sales. The company generates its data based on 55,000 mobile applications running on smartphones.
