The 2012 election is sure to be one of the most contentious in history, as deficits, entitlements, energy policies, and the overall health of the economy is at the forefront of voters' minds.

Here are five iPhone apps to help keep you informed and abreast on all the latest election information.

iDemocrat, Proud Republican

Politics are generally seen as poor cocktail party discussion, but that doesn't mean you can't wear your support on your iPhone. The iDemocrat and Proud Republican apps are simple apps that allow you to show your political colors proudly on your iPhone. The free version of the app merely offers a picture of a donkey or an elephant to display on your phone.

The iDemocrat app is a free app that gets updated twice a week with stats on how many people have downloaded the apps. You can

costs $2.99, but gives you plenty bang for your conservative buck. In the latest version, you get access to talk radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and others, while also getting updated news feeds from places like

It was selected as "Best Conservative iPhone App" in the App Store, and is compatible with all your iOS devices. It requires you have iOS 4.0 or later.

is an app that offers information on national poll results, live streaming videos, and continuous updates from

"Live Wire."

Some of the features included in the app are access to local and national stories, interviews and biographies on the candidates, fact checking, photos and more. You'll also get access to journalists from Hearst's many television stations across the country, including those in battleground states such as Ohio and Florida.

This free app is compatible with all iPhone's back to the 3GS, and requires iOS 4.0 or later. It's also compatible with iPad and the latest generation iPod Touch.

has become a force for all things politics since launching in January 2007, and as the 2012 presidential race draws to a close users may want to check the app. The

is very easy to navigate, and the site is known to break news faster than other news outlets.

has a slew of journalists breaking news from the White House, Capitol Hill, and lobbyists, as well as how they interact with Wall Street, the media and various personalities.

The free app, which was recently updated in September, has a variety of key features to keep you up-to-date on all things election. The "Sections" button allows users to switch between Politico news, blogs, policy, and other sections. Articles can be zoomed in on up to 4x, and sharing to social media including Twitter and

Facebook

is easy from inside the app.

The Politico app requires iPhone users to have downloaded iOS 4.3, and is optimized for iPhone 5.

Candidates

If you still haven't decided which candidate is the best one for you, the

app picks one for you. You can match up your opinions with those of the candidate, then hopefully find a candidate that mirrors your own images with this free app.

The Candidates app asks you a series of questions, and then based upon your answers, matches you up with the Republican, Democratic or independent candidate best suited to your responses. You can also research a particular topic with articles generates from each question if you are uncertain on a particular issues.

Once you are finished, you can learn more about the candidates, as the app provides you links to various Web sites, research pages and social media outlets about each candidate. You can also view which candidate has been agreed with on certain issues, in a results poll to see where you stack up.
