President Donald Trump has reportedly told Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto to stop publicly claiming the country will not be paying for Trump's border wall, transcripts of a call between the two obtained by the Washington Post show.

Trump ran his 2016 campaign on the promise that he would build a wall along the U.S. Mexico border and get the Mexican government to pay for it. While Trump supporters loved the idea, the border wall has been met with backlash and criticism, with experts saying it will be too expensive and won't accomplish what Trump thinks it will.

Mexico refuses to pay for the wall.

"You cannot say that to the press," Trump is said to have told Pena Nieto. Trump is also said to have made it clear he understands the funding will need to come from another source, the Post says. However, Trump threatened to cut off contact with Mexico's president if he continued to publicly state Mexico won't pay.

"If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that," Trump reportedly said.
