Facebook No 'Friend' of Google: Today's Outrage

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Google (GOOG) - Get Report may want to un-friend Facebook.

OK, I'm not sure they were ever friends, but they are fast becoming mortal enemies in an intensifying battle for digital souls.

For those who may think of Google as invincible, Facebook took the search giant down a peg last week when it surpassed Google as the most-visited Web site in the U.S. for the first time.

The stats are pretty amazing -- Facebook's market share of visits surged 185% for the week ending March 13 compared with the same period of 2009, while Google volume rose only 9%, according to Web tracker

Hitwise.

So much for Google's "Buzz" -- which has been annoying many gmail fans by cluttering their inboxes as Google tries to muscle into the social media/micro blogging realm of Facebook and Twitter.

Is this the beginning of a new era on the Web, when people "share" information more than they search for it?
