NEW YORK (

-- Marathon Petroleum

(NYSE:

MPC

) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, solid stock price performance, notable return on equity, good cash flow from operations and compelling growth in net income. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company shows low profit margins.

Highlights from the ratings report include:

  • The revenue growth came in higher than the industry average of 13.3%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues rose by 15.8%. Growth in the company's revenue appears to have helped boost the earnings per share.
  • Powered by its strong earnings growth of 27.64% and other important driving factors, this stock has surged by 67.09% over the past year, outperforming the rise in the S&P 500 Index during the same period. Regarding the stock's future course, although almost any stock can fall in a broad market decline, MPC should continue to move higher despite the fact that it has already enjoyed a very nice gain in the past year.
  • The return on equity has improved slightly when compared to the same quarter one year prior. This can be construed as a modest strength in the organization. Compared to other companies in the Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels industry and the overall market, MARATHON PETROLEUM CORP's return on equity significantly exceeds that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels industry. The net income increased by 21.6% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, going from $596.00 million to $725.00 million.
  • Net operating cash flow has significantly increased by 499.13% to $2,079.00 million when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, MARATHON PETROLEUM CORP has also vastly surpassed the industry average cash flow growth rate of -24.27%.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in refining, transporting, and marketing petroleum products primarily in the United States. It operates through Refining & Marketing, Speedway, and Pipeline Transportation segments. The company has a P/E ratio of 7.8, below the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7. Marathon has a market cap of $23.08 billion and is part of the basic materials sector and energy industry. Shares are up 12.8% year to date as of the close of trading on Monday.
