European Shares Turn Higher; Asia Mixed

NEW YORK (
) -- European shares turned higher Thursday after trading mixed earlier. Asian stocks ended mixed.
In Europe, London stocks rose by 0.6%, while shares in Frankfurt and Paris gained 0.4%.
In European corporate news, German car and truck maker
Daimler
(DAI)
reported a wider-than-expected fourth-quarter loss of 352 million euros ($478 million), and said it won't pay a dividend for 2009. Daimler shares were trading lower by about 7%.
Societe Generale
, France's second-largest bank, said its fourth-quarter earnings more than doubled from a year earlier. U.K. defense company
BAE Systems
reported a 2009 loss of 67 million pounds ($104.7 million) as it recorded impairment charges of about 1 billion pounds.
The Nikkei 225 average in Tokyo rose 0.3% Thursday to close at 10,335.69. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong fell 0.5% to 20,422.15.
Premarket futures in the U.S. suggested stocks would open mixed Thursday on Wall Street.
On Wednesday, the
Dow Jones Industrial Average
rose 0.4% to 10,309.24. The
Nasdaq
composite gained 0.6% and the
S&P 500
rose 0.4% to 1,099.51.
