WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar Renews Contract
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- World heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar hit wrestling fans with a surprise announcement Tuesday, saying he renewed his contract with the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) - Get Report organization.
The announcement comes just less than a week from the upcoming WrestleMania event on Sunday. Wrestling fans have been on edge wondering about Lesnar's status, given he walked out of WWE Raw earlier this month over a contract dispute with WWE's CEO Vince McMahon, according to a report in Inquisitr.com.
Some wrestling fans questioned whether Lesnar would resign from WWE after WrestleMania and rejoin the Ultimate Fighting Championship. But in an interview on ESPN's "SportsCenter," Lesnar announced he isn't going back to UFC but re-signed with the WWE, according to USA Today. During the interview, Lesnar said:
It was a very hard decision for me. I'm at a stage in my career where I want to...it was just hard. And it's hard to talk about it. The fighter inside of me wants to compete. The father, the husband -- you know I'm an older caveman now, so I make wiser caveman decisions. So I'm here to say that my legacy in the octagon is over. However, my legacy this Sunday at WrestleMania will not be my last."
Lesnar joined WWE in 2002, but after becoming a WWE champion left to briefly join the National Football League. He ultimately returned to wrestling to become an UFC heavyweight champion, according to USA Today. In 2012, after recovering from a medical issue that took him out of the UFC, he rejoined the WWE.
