13 Best Luxury Cars When Price Is Definitely Not an Object
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The Robb Report is out with its annual list of its top luxury cars of the year, and this year's edition is an eclectic mix of high-end brands, hybrid vehicles and even a Kia (yes, a Kia).
For the first time in the 22-year history of the list, a hybrid was named Car of the Year -- the Porsche 918 Spyder, an $845,000 beauty with almost 900 horsepower that sold out within six months of going on sale. For our accompanying video, we couldn't even track down one of the Spyders to film.
The Kia that made the cut was the South Korean carmaker's K900 luxury sedan, which at $54,500 was the lowest-priced car on the list.
Overall, the luxury car market is on fire, with sales of ultra-luxury vehicles expected to triple from 123,000 units in 2010 to 353,000 units in 2020, according to data from IHS Automotive analyst Tim Urquhart.
The U.S. accounts for 50% or more of the market for luxury car sales, said David Arnold, SVP and group publisher of Robb Report, with the surging stock market and Wall Street bonuses contributing to the demand.
"People spent a few years not spending money, and so they've decided to come out in force and start to invest in things they see have real value," Arnold said.
He added that the Middle East accounts for a significant share of luxury car sales, although it's a small number of people who are buying multiple vehicles.
"There are a fair amount of stories about people who have 20, 30 or 50 Ferraris," Arnold said.
Some 150 judges, all avid car collectors, spent 10 days test-driving and debating the relative merits of the cars in Napa Valley, Calif., back in November. The judges shared their opinions at lavish nightly dinners where the discussions often got heated, Robb Report says.
"We're looking for style, performance, efficiency, ergonomics, design, technology and all of the comforts you'd expect in a luxury vehicle," said Arnold.
Last year's winner was the powerful Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which starts at a cool $316,000, while the runner-up was the Audi R8 V10 Plus, an all-wheel drive sports car that was the Car of the Year in 2008 and has since finished second three times.
TheStreet rounded up the Robb Report's final rankings for 2015.
13. Cadillac ELR
One Robb Report judge called this hybrid coupe "a beautiful car for what it's intended to be." The extended-range electric vehicle can reach speeds of 106 mph, and goes from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds.
12. Kia K900
At $54,500, Kia's luxury sedan stacks up nicely against its pricier competitors, like Audi and Mercedes-Benz, Robb Report says. It's the lowest price car on the list, which is why some judges "dismissed" the car, Robb Report said.
11. Mercedes-Benz S550 4-Matic Coupe
The Robb Report described this $119,900 coupe as "comfortable and deceptively quiet," especially given its 449 horsepower V-8 engine. Each seat contains a hot-stone massage feature and an atomizer that disperses various scents.
10. Maserati Ghibli S Q4
At $77,900 this four-door sedan seems like a bargain. With just a V-6 engine, the car can still reach 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. Maserati saw record sales levels in 2014, selling 36,500 cars, a 136% increase over 2013.
9. Jaguar F-Type R Coupe
At $99,000, this 550 horsepower sports car features a Meridian 770-watt speaker system and a heated steering wheel.
8. Rolls-Royce Wraith
The Robb Report emphasized the comfort inside this massive 5,400-lb Rolls-Royce, which has a twin-turbocharged V-12 engine. The coupe starts at $284,900. Rapper Rick Ross purchased a Wraith last year. Sales at Rolls-Royce are brisk, with the company selling 4,063 cars in 2014 worldwide, a 12% increase.
7. Bentley Continental GT V8 S Convertible
This Bentley may only have an 8-cylinder engine, but it can go from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The car also comes in a coupe and starts at $219,400. Reality star Kim Kardashian reportedly owns one. Last year was a record-setter for Bentley, which sold 11,020 cars, an increase of 9%.
6. Audi RS 7
Just because the RS 7 has four-doors doesn't mean it can't perform. With a top speed of 174 mph and a 560 horsepower engine, this versatile sedan can be yours for just $106,500. Stand-up comedian Chris D'Elia expressed appreciation for his RS 7 in a Facebook post.
5. Aston Martin Vanquish Volante
The Vanquish Volante can reach speeds of 197 mph, about 14 mph faster than the 2014 model. The car came in at No. 4 on Robb Report's list last year and starts at $302,995.
4. Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4
With a 5.2-liter V-10 engine supplying 610 horsepower, this all-wheel drive sports car can reach speeds of 202 mph. But it doesn't come cheap, with a $240,000 price tag. In 2014, Lamborghini saw record sales, delivering 2,530 units, compared to 2,121 in 2013.
3. BMW i8
The BMW i8 is capable of going from zero to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds via its 357 horsepower engine. Not bad for a plug-in hybrid priced at $136,500. NHL star Scottie Upshall reportedly drives an i8.
2. Ferrari California T
Priced at just under $200,000, the Ferrari California T accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and uses 15% less fuel than previous models. Ferrari said it doesn't release sales figures.
1. Porsche 918 Spyder
This $845,000 plug-in hybrid boasts almost 900 horsepower and sold out within six months of going on sale, Robb Report said. This is the first year the magazine named a hybrid as its "Car of the Year." Porsche said the bulk of the limited number of 918 Spyders manufactured were sold to U.S. customers -- some 297 cars. China and Germany accounted for 100 units each.
