What Is 'Amazon Assistant' and Why Is Amazon Offering You $10 to Install It?

The browser extension makes it possible to comparison shop between Amazon and other shopping sites.

Amazon Prime members may have noticed a new deal offered during Prime Day this year: A $10 site credit to install a tool called Amazon Assistant.

The tool is a desktop browser extension that offers a few benefits for avid online shoppers, according to Amazon's web page explaining the product. These benefits include the ability to view Amazon (AMZN) - Get Report products and rating while you browse other sites, save "universal" shopping lists that include both Amazon products and those from other sites, and other shortcuts and discount notifications.

According to the privacy policy, Amazon collects and processes browser information -- including URLs, search terms, search results, page metadata, and some page content -- "from websites for which we may have relevant product or service recommendations." Amazon said that it connects this data to your Amazon account only when you interact with Amazon Assistant, such as by clicking a compare result.

Amazon wasn't immediately available for comment on whether any browser data captured via Amazon Assistant could be used with Amazon's other services, namely its growing advertising business -- but we will update if we hear back.

Amazon shares were roughly flat at $2,015.58 by mid-day Tuesday and are up 31% so far this year.
