This weekend, action comedy espionage and talking Lego toys are set to take the top spot in box offices from "It" and Pennywise the child-terrorizing clown.
Spy movie "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" is tracking to rake in between $40 million and $45 million when the Twenty-First Century Fox Inc.-owned (FOX) - Get Report 20th Century Fox action comedy opens nationwide this weekend. It's the second installment of Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman" series following sleeper hit "Kingsman: Secret Service" that earned $414.4 million globally in 2015, according to the Hollywood Reporter. In Thursday night sales, "Kingsman 2" more than doubled its predecessor's early earnings with $3.4 million in sales Thursday night.
For the younger set, Time Warner Inc.-owned (TWX) Warner Brothers' "The Lego Ninjago Movie" is tracking to open with $30 million in initial ticket sales. A follow-up to "The Lego Movie" from 2014 and "The Lego Batman Movie" earlier this year, "Ninjago" is based on the eponymous toy brand wildly popular with young boys.
The sequel-heavy weekend comes after Warner Brothers' "It" smashed box office records. Entering its third weekend, the horror flick is on track to surpass 1973's "The Exorcist" as the top-grossing horror film of all time in domestic theaters.
In select cinemas, preseason contenders have kicked off the bid for Hollywood's top accolades. Fox Searchlight's "Battle of the Sexes," Roadside Attractions' "Stronger," and Focus Features' "Victoria and Abdul" are all considered top contenders for Oscar nods and open in select locations this weekend.
