U.N. Security Council Discusses Korea
UNITED NATIONS -- Rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula prompted an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council Sunday.
North Korea has warned of a "catastrophe" if South Korea conducts planned live-fire military exercises in coming days, the
Associated Press
reported.
Russia, which borders North Korea, called for Sunday's meeting and wants the Security Council to adopt a statement calling on the two Korean governments to "exercise maximum restraint," the
AP
added.
Moscow is also calling for immediate diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between the two Koreas, the
AP
also reported.
South Korea plans to conduct its military exercises on the same island where it carried out drills last month. The North responded to those drills with artillery fire that killed two South Korean marines and two civilians.
