Toyota To Expand Disclosure: Report
TOKYO (
) - Troubled automaker
Toyota
(TM) - Get Report
is planning a new level of disclosure about
beyond what it is currently required to reveal, according to the
Associated Press
.
Earlier this week the world's largest automaker announced plans to
recall about 437,000 hybrid cars worldwide
, including the popular Prius, to fix braking problems.
Toyota now plans to voluntarily disclose problems that are below recall-level seriousness, the
AP
said, in an attempt to boost its flagging reputation.
"We're trying to be proactive," said Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi. "Some consumers are worried, so even if the information doesn't rise to the level of a recall, we are taking this step to restore the company's credibility."
The disclosure news comes at a time when Toyota president Akio Toyoda is coming under pressure to testify before the U.S. Congress at hearings to discuss the safety problems later this month.
