A deadly typhoon that battered China's gambling region of Macau helped propel the opposition political party to slight gains in elections over the weekend. 

The pro-Beijing political party still holds the majority of legislative seats, but the opposition party won five out of 33 seats in Sunday's vote, one more than it won in the election four years ago.

One of the winners was 26-year-old pro-democracy politician Sulu Sou, who had previously led a 20,000 person march against a bill designed to furnish outgoing Macau officials with a generous exit package. 

Pro-Beijing politicians have been friendly to casino industry interests, so any changes in the power structure in Macau could spell trouble for American companies like Las Vegas Sands (LVS) - Get Report , Wynn Resorts (WYNN) - Get Report and MGM Resorts Int'l (MGM) - Get Report that operate in the region.
