Microsoft Cloud Executive to JD.com to Bolster Cloud Offerings

China's JD.com (JD) - Get Report has recruited a top cloud computing executive in China from Microsoft (MSFT) - Get Report , as the Chinese e-commerce giant looks to bolster its cloud services business, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Samuel Shen, a 24-year veteran of Microsoft and the tech titan's former general manager of its cloud unit in China, will assume the role of president at JD's cloud business.

The move is a potential blow to Microsoft which provides cloud services in China via joint ventures with local firms. JD's ramp up stands to threatens its market share in the country.

China's market for cloud services spiked 68% to $1.47 billion in 2016, according to industry researcher International Data Corp.

Shares of JD.com were rising during Tuesday morning trading.
