Apple, Fitbit Part of FDA Pilot Program to Expedite Health Devices to Market

Other companies including Samsung Electronics, Alphabet's Verily Life Sciences, Johnson & Johnson and Roche Holding will also participate in the program.

The FDA said on Tuesday that it has chosen nine tech companies for a pilot program that could help the firms selected avoid certain regulations tied to developing health software and products, Bloomberg reports.

"We need to modernize our regulatory framework so that it matches the kind of innovation we're being asked to evaluate," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said.

Companies including Apple (AAPL) - Get Report , Fitbit Inc. (FIT) - Get Report , Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNLF) , Alphabet's (GOOGL) - Get Report Verily Life Sciences, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) - Get Report and Roche Holding AG (RHHBY) will participate in the program that will help them bring health devices to market at an expedited rate.

In the past, it could have taken months to get regulatory clearance for such devices.
