Athersys, Lionbridge: Early Volume Plays

) -- Several stocks trading near $5 were poised to move on above-average volume during Wednesday's session.
Athersys

jumped by 77 cents, or 26.7%, to $3.65 after the biopharmaceuticals company said it has received a U.S. patent covering adult stem cell composition and production. Athersys also said it's been granted a European patent for non-embryonic, pluripotent stem cells. Volume topped 3.62 million shares in the first 30 minutes of trading, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 3.14 million, according to the
Nasdaq
.
Alexza Pharmaceuticals
(ALXA)
slumped by 16 cents, or 6%, to $2.51 after spiking higher at the start of trading after
Biovail
said it has entered into a license and collaboration agreement with Alexza for AZ-004, which is initially targeted for the treatment of agitation in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Volume topped 160,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 109,000.
Lionbridge Technologies
(LIOX)
rallied by 47 cents, or 17.8%, to $3.11 after the language and development technology company reported a fourth-quarter profit of 3 cents a share, surprising analysts who had forecasted a loss of a penny a share. Looking ahead to the first quarter, Lionbridge offered in-line revenue guidance. Volume topped 313,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 199,000.
Capstone Turbine
(CPST) - Get Report
gained 9 cents, or 7.9%, to $1.23 after the microturbine technology company saw its stock upgraded by Northland Securities to outperform from market perform after its fiscal third-quarter results. Excluding a non-cash warrant liability benefit, Capstone lost 5 cents a share in the quarter, which matched analysts' estimates. Revenue for the third quarter was $16 million, an increase of 39% from a year ago to the highest level in company history. Volume topped 742,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 2.11 million.
