Apple Is Clobbering Alphabet In 3D Sensing Chips
One the newest features debuted when Apple (AAPL) - Get Report unveiled the all-new iPhone X was the phone's Face ID technology, allowing users to use their face to unlock the phone or even process payments.
The facial recognition software will also play a pivotal role in augmented reality, which Securities' analyst Jun Zhang contends gives the tech titan a commanding lead in the technology when compared to Alphabet's (GOOGL) - Get Report Google's Android operating software.
The technology, powered by chips in both the front and rear of the phone, are referred to as "3D Sensing" chips, and they pose the ultimate challenge to Android.
Apple's exclusive agreement with manufacturers of optimal components Lumentum, Finisar
(FNSR) - Get Report , and II-VI Inc. for the chips involved "makes it difficult for Android smartphones to replicate Apple's 3D sensing model," Zhang noted.
