In an effort to broaden the appeal of its digital assistant Alexa, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) - Get Report is opening up development for Alexa to outside developers for the first time.

The company launched the Alexa Voice Service Device SDK toolset to allow companies to add a fully functional Alexa to their own devices. The SDK has previously only been available in an invite-only preview period. During that period over 50 companies began developing Alexa powered devices.

Amazon shares were down 0.76% to $970.76 in morning trading Thursday.
