Stock Market Today - Air Liquide to Buy Airgas in $13.4 Billion Deal

NEW YORK (TheStreet) France's Air Liquide said it would buy U.S. company Airgas (ARG) in a deal worth $13.4 billion including debt. Airgas is the industry leader in U.S. packaged gases. Its acquisition will increase Air Liquide's Gas & Services sales by around 30%.

  • Monsanto (MON) executives are discussing whether the company should buy rivals including pesticide maker Syngenta (SYT), after it abandoned a $45 billion bid for it in August. Syngenta last week rejected a $42 billion offer from state-owned China National Chemical Corp, according to Bloomberg.
  • Barclays (BCS) is set to pay another fine of around $100 million to resolve allegations that it abused foreign exchange markets, the Financial Times reports.
  • Bank of England deputy governor Ben Broadbent said that market pricing of when the central bank will raise interest rates from their record low could be misleading and change very quickly. He also said investors should not "focus obsessively" on the central bank's inflation forecasts and instead to concentrate on the broader factors driving growth.
  • The U.K. government will aim to shut down all coal-fired power plants by 2025, energy secretary Amber Rudd said. This move would encourage the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, but also gas.
