Our world has been plagued in recent weeks by damaging hurricanes and earthquakes that have uprooted the lives of millions of people, costing billions and billions of dollars.
From the ongoing impacts being felt from Hurricane Maria, to Hurricane Harvey's devastating impacts on Houston, Hurricane Irma's destruction across Florida, and the massive earthquake that shook Mexico City and claimed hundred of lives, the pain from these disasters is being felt in immense proportions.
In light of these recent disasters, TheStreet has compiled a list of the best U.S. states to live in to avoid such natural disasters.

Detroit, Michigan's biggest city, has been ranked one of the nation's safest cities to be shielded from natural disasters, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and insurance network Homeownersinsurance.com.
Data from World Atlas showed that Colorado was one of the nation's top states safeguarded from threats of hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, droughts and tornadoes.
Cleveland, the state's second-largest city, was ranked as the second safest from natural disasters in the country by CBS News. Several other cities in Ohio have been named safe havens from natural disasters, including Cincinnati and Dayton.
Maryland suburbs including Bethesda, Rockville, and Frederick were all ranked among the nation's safest from natural disasters by the real estate information site Trulia.
While New York City is vulnerable to severe storms and flooding, the upstate New York cities of Buffalo and Syracuse rank among the safest places to live to avoid natural disasters.
Maine was ranked one of the safest states in the U.S. to avoid a natural disaster by personal finance website WalletHub.
WalletHub named Vermont as the safest state in the U.S. to live based on a number of factors, including its natural disaster ranking.
