Miami International Airport Aims for Full Service Friday
Although the storm has died down, the costs of Hurricane Irma are piling up.
Miami International Airport is still operating with limited service Wednesday, at about 50% of full capacity, according to Greg Chin, communications director, Miami-Dade Aviation Department.
The airport plans to see 225 Wednesday arrivals and 208 departures, with a total of 402 flights cancelled. That's about 50% of MIA's normal schedule, says Chin.
Of the more than 100 airlines at the hub, offering international and domestic flights, American Airlines Inc. (AAL) - Get Report is the main player, according to Marc Henderson, media and public relations officer for the Miami International Airport.
American is also the main holdout. Henderson says the airport could return to full capacity by Friday, but not without American Airlines on board. American Airlines' Ross Feinstein, senior manager, corporate communications, says the airline won't be fully operational at Miami International until "the weekend."
The costs to the airport and the airline are still being compiled. But they must be huge, since American Airlines recently cut its third-quarter forecast blaming Irma. The airline now guides to revenue being flat to up 1%, down from an increase of up to 2.5%, touted before the deadly hurricane.
