A Toast to Keeping Companies in Line Microsoft and the Securities and Exchange Commission just settled a dispute over the company's use of cash reserves to smooth out volatility in its earnings reports, which resulted in earnings misstatements. While the SEC said that Microsoft's actions didn't harm investors, keeping a keen eye on accounting irregularities, even innocuous ones, should be applauded.
