Sun Micro Reportedly Scraps 'Rock' Chip

Sun Microsystems (JAVA Quote) has canceled its Rock chip project, the New York Times reports, citing two people briefed on Sun's plans.
Sun, which is being acquired by Oracle(ORCL Quote) for about $7 billion, has been working on the Rock project for more than five years. It had hoped to create a chip with many cores that would top competing server chips from IBM(IBM Quote) and Intel(INTC Quote), the Times reports.
Rock was at one point scheduled to ship last year, but Sun has delayed it a number of times, and over the past few months company insiders have complained about various glitches hurting the product, the Times reports. Sun has been relying on chips from Fujitsu for its larger servers while it waited for the development of Rock to be completed, and is now is likely to just continue using Fujitsu chips. ...
